Thanks to my friend Ryan August’s site I Want Your Skull, I have recently been introduced to many great new artists and websites.
One of my favourite artists of late is John Baizley. Not only is John an amazing artist but he also fronts the metal band Baroness from Savannah, Georgia. He designs many of the jackets for his band’s CDs and also creates artwork for great bands such as Kylesa.
Many of his designs are available in t-shirt form and I recently purchased two of them (see above) at a very reasonable price from the excellent Shirt Killer.
See John and his band in action in the clip below.
Here is another skull-based illustration that I completed recently.
I went with a sci-fi theme and wanted to give the piece a smooth and slick feel.
I also tried to make the skull more decorative than grotesque.
These days I don’t seem to be able to stick with one style or theme for long, but I guess I can claim that “I’m experimenting with new styles”.
On a separate note I’d like to thank my friend/technical advisor John of I Love Typography fame for switching my site over to a new server. The site should be a lot more stable now.
Here is an illustration that I completed a few weeks ago called “The Shadows”.
Again I wanted to create a larger scale and more detailed piece.
In the end I decided to give it a slightly Japanese look reminiscent of old ghost pictures and added some stamps in the corner to emphasize the point.
