Matt Hawkins kindly sent me a link to a short video that will be featured on the DVD to be released with his book “Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build” next Spring.
It introduces all of the featured artists’ papercraft, and if you watch carefully a few of my designs are featured about halfway through.
On a similar note, I will be dropping my (delayed) papercraft for October very shortly.
Thanks to my friend Ryan August’s site I Want Your Skull, I have recently been introduced to many great new artists and websites.
One of my favourite artists of late is John Baizley. Not only is John an amazing artist but he also fronts the metal band Baroness from Savannah, Georgia. He designs many of the jackets for his band’s CDs and also creates artwork for great bands such as Kylesa.
Many of his designs are available in t-shirt form and I recently purchased two of them (see above) at a very reasonable price from the excellent Shirt Killer.
See John and his band in action in the clip below.
Here is a video interview with my favourite artist and toy designer James Jarvis.
The interview provides an insight into James’s techniques, as well as his philosophy on art in general.
We also get a good look at James’s studio and sneak peeks at some rare sketches and toys.
I rarely use other people’s creations in my work, but the other week I was consumed by the urge to come up with a piece based on Freddy vs Jason.
As most people know, the actual movie of this title was a big disappointment, but my picture is more of a homage to the individual characters.
The first Nightmare on Elm Street was fantastic, and Friday the 13th was pretty good for the first 2 episodes (ironically before Jason got his iconic hockey mask).
For a reminder of where those long arms of Freddy’s came from, here is a clip from the original film.
I finally added the finishing touches to this piece that I started a little while back. It is a tribute to one of my favourite TV shows of all time, Twin Peaks.
We recently finished watching the second season which was finally released on DVD last year. Watching the whole thing again confirmed in my mind the fact that director David Lynch is one of the few people alive today that I would describe as a true genius.
Here also is the clip from Twin Peaks that inspired my picture.
Here is a new promo film for the exclusive white colourway of Yod.
What makes him so special you ask? He has different hands!
These things make all the difference for helpless collectors like myself…
It’s toy time again.
This time I present to you the mighty Yod!
Yod is the latest creation from my favourite British artist James Jarvis and was produced by Amos Toys.
Despite his simple appearance Yod has a wealth of back story. Yod’s shape was apparently produced using a complex and mystical mathematical formula…
Either way, Yod’s simple design brings back memories of childhood TV characters and showcases Jarvis’ ability to create lovable characters with the simplest of strokes.
Though sold out in the UK, Yod can still be purchased from Amos Japan and is available in 6 tasty flavours.
Below are 2 videos from the legendary Welsh band The Super Furry Animals.
SFA have a long term relationship with one of my favourite artists Pete Fowler, famous for his monster designs produced through his Monsterism label.
Pete was responsible for a few of SFA’s jackets and here you can see a full animation for the song Hello Sunshine.
The second vid is also from SFA and I just liked it because it looked like the kind of game I used to play when I was young. The song is Lazer Beam.
