Last week I received a batch of the latest issue of “I Want Your Skull” magazine from my friend Ryan August.
As I mentioned before, my illustration features in this issue so I was suitably excited to get my paws on the magazine.

Though I do say so myself, I think this issue is one of the best so far. For this issue Ryan decided to go with only illustrations and no articles and I think this was a good decision, as it makes for a very pure and clean aesthetic.

The magazine is available directly from Ryan through the I Want Your Skull website, and also from me if anyone happens to be in Japan.

Below is the illustration that I submitted for this issue, entitled originally enough “I Want Your Skull”.

先週ネット友のRyan Augustさんから、雑誌「I Want Your Skull」の最新号を何冊か送って頂いた。
前にお知らせした様に、今回は僕のイラストが載っているので、もちろん出版されるのを楽しみに待っていた。
自分で言うのも何だけど、この号もかなり面白いものとなっている。
今回はRyanさんは、あえて文章なしのオール・イラスト版にした。
新鮮で美学的な印象があり、大成功だと思う！

The Art of Gravity group exhibition finished last Sunday.
We had a pretty good week with roughly the same amount of visitors as last time.

As an artist it is always interesting to see what kind of things catch people’s attention.
This time I had more detailed and perhaps more horror themed pieces on display, but as always it was the “cuter”, simpler characters (like my “Meat Bear“) that seemed to be more popular. Hardly a surprise I suppose, and the reason why I always try to produce a range of work as I know that skulls are not to everyone’s liking. It was also the first time that I had displayed my papercraft, which gave people something a little different to look at.

I am currently playing with some ideas for different kinds of exhibitions, but if possible I would like to keep the Gravity project going and have at least one group show a year.

「The Art of Gravity展　第３弾」が先週の日曜日に無事終わりました。
客数は第２弾と同じ位で、かなりいい展示会になったと思う。

アーティストとして、お客さんがどんな展示物に興味を示すか、というのはいつも面白い。
今回、僕の作品は前回より細かい（こっている？）、ホラー・テイストのものが多かったと思う。
でも、やっぱりシンプルで可愛いキャラクター（「Meat Bear」など）の方が人気を集めた。
皆が皆スカルが好きってわけではないので、いつも出来るだけ色んなキャラクターを描くようにしている。
今回初めてペーパークラフトも展示して、一味違うものがあってよかったと思う。

今後、色んなプロジェクトを考えているけど、グループ展示会のコンセプトが好きなので、
できれば少なくとも年一回くらいGravity展を開きたいと思っている。

Matt Hawkins kindly sent me a link to a short video that will be featured on the DVD to be released with his book “Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build” next Spring.
It introduces all of the featured artists’ papercraft, and if you watch carefully a few of my designs are featured about halfway through.

On a similar note, I will be dropping my (delayed) papercraft for October very shortly.

この映像は本のおまけのＤＶＤ入っていて、各アーティストのペーパークラフトを紹介する。
僕のデザインは途中で一瞬だけ出て来ます。集中してみてくださいね。

そろそろ（延期になった）10月分の新ペーパークラフトをアップする予定。

I thought it was about time that I updated with a few pieces of Horrorwood news.

Firstly as I am sure most of you will have noticed I am slowly bringing a few different touches to the site and started with a new header logo.

This also brings me to my second piece of news. I have just completed my third t-shirt design. The front bears the above new logo in shocking pink, with “The Beast of Horrorwood” curled up on the back. I personally feel that this is the best shirt so far. More details can be found on the t-shirts page.

Thirdly, as I may have mentioned before, my papercraft “Go Bananas” is to feature in a bona fide published book. It is called “Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build“, and was put together by web aquaintance Matt Hawkins, who kindly asked me to join the project a few months ago. The book will be out next Spring but is available for pre-order on Amazon now. It will include a DVD of all the papercraft designs for readers to put together themselves.

Lastly, today was the opening day of The Art of Gravity Part 3 show. It was a national holiday here in Japan today and this was reflected in the number of visitors we had (over 100 at the midway point when I left). We were also interviewed live on local radio. I feel that I have upped the ante both with the quality of my artwork and display this year. The show will be running all week if anyone is in the area.

ホラーウッドの最新ニュースです。

まず始めに、お気づきの方もいるとは思いますが、最近ブログのイメージをちょっと変えようと思い、
手始めにブログのトップにあるホラーウッドのロゴを作り直した。

それから、三番目のデザインのＴシャツが完成した。
表のプリントは先ほど紹介した新ロゴで、色はショッキングピンク。
後ろには新デザインのモンスターが載っている。
このＴシャツが今までで一番よく出来たと、自分では思っている。

次はペーパークラフト。
以前ブログに書いたかもしれないが、僕のクラフト「Go Bananas」は本格的な本に掲載される。
本のタイトルは「Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build」。
ウェブを通して知り合ったMatt Hawkinsさんが編集したもので、来年の春に発売予定だけど、既にアマゾンなどで予約できるらしい。
本に載っているペーパークラフトを印刷することができるＤＶＤが本に付いている。

最後のニュース。
今日から、グループ展示会「The Art of Gravity 第三弾」が始まった。
祝日ということで沢山の人が来てくれた。
僕が4時頃に帰った時点で来客数が100人を超えていた！！
それにＲＮＣ西日本放送のラジオも来てくれ、インタビューされた。
個人的に、僕の作品やディスプレイは前回よりパワーアップ出来たと思っている。
展示会は今週の日曜日までやっているので、高松周辺にいらしたら是非見に来てください。

There is nothing I find more satisfying than getting a piece of original artwork from a friend or acquaintance.
A while back an internet acquaintance of mine, the highly talented comic book artist Eric Talbot, expressed an interest in my skullboy t-shirts.
A few months ago I found that I had one of the shirts hidden away in a cupboard and so I decided to send it to Eric. In return Eric was kind enough to send me the illustration pictured here. Needless to say I was over the moon.
It is great to hold traditional artwork of this quality in one’s own hands, especially as someone who does everything digitally.
Eric has several excellent blogs on which he regularly introduces his artwork. Please take a look:

知り合いや友達のアーティストからオリジナルなアートを頂くのは何よりも嬉しい。
だいぶ前にネットで知り合った、非常に腕の上手い漫画アーティスト、Eric Talbotさんが、僕のSkullboyのTシャツに興味を示してくれた。
数ヶ月前に物置の奥から残りの一枚が出て来て、Ericさんに送ろうと思った。
お返しにEricさんはここに紹介しているイラストを送ってくれた。ものすごく嬉しかった！
僕は最近作品を全てパソコンで作っているので、この様な本物の手描きのイラストを目の前にしたら、本当に感動した。
Ericさんはいくつかのブログを持っていて、定期的に作品をアップしているので、是非見てみてください：

「The Art of Gravity」展、第三弾を一年ぶりに開催します！
10月13日～19日に開催する予定で、メンバーは前回と殆ど一緒（メンバーの人数だけが変わって、今回は7人になる）。
フライヤーとポスターのデザインが出来たのでここで紹介します。アーティストの詳しいプロフィールなどはホームページへ。
展示会のジャンルがあいかわらず幅広くて、絵、写真、彫刻、シルバー、かばん、等等。
僕はイラストやＴシャツ、小物などを展示する予定です。
10月に高松にいらしゃったら、是非来て見てください。

After a year’s hiatus The Art of Gravity group show will return this October from the 13th to the 19th.
Most of the details are the same as before, except for the number of artists participating (this time 7).
The flyers and the posters are done and are presented here and more details can be found on the homepage.
There will be painting, photography, sculpture, silver work, bags and a lot more.
I myself will be displaying illustrations along with some t-shirts and other products.
If anyone happens to be in Takamatsu, Japan in October please swing by.

この間、アートサイト「I Want Your Skull」のRyanさんから突然メールを頂きました。
その内容は次の雑誌のためにイラストを描くという招待状でした。
もちろんメチャ嬉しかったんだけど、同時にちょっと緊張感が沸いて来ました。
なぜかというとその雑誌のイラストのレベルが非常に高くて、毎回有名なアーティストも参加しているから。
でも腕試しというか、テクニックを磨くチャンスだと思ったので早速、絶対参加させてもらいたいという返事を出しました。

今週イラストが完成し、雑誌の高い基準を満たす作品になることを望んでいます。
計画通りに行ったら、僕のイラストは今度の雑誌に載せてもらえます。とりあえず、そのデザインをちょっとだけ披露します。

Ryanさんは濱田くんが作ってくれたSkullboyのフィギュアについてもアップしてくれました。そのポストはこちら。

A few weeks ago Ryan from I Want Your Skull surprised me with an invitation to submit some artwork for the next issue of his magazine. I was of course delighted but at the same time a little apprehensive, as the quality of the work found in the magazine is exceptional and there are usually many well known names in the lineup. However I took it as an opportunity to raise my game and have just completed a piece that I hope meets the standard of the magazine.

All being well my piece will feature in the next issue of I Want Your Skull. In the meantime here is a sneak peek of my illustration.

昨日Gravityのメンバー嶋谷と濱田が家を訪ねてくれた。
着いてすぐ、浜田君に小さい金属の箱を渡された。開けたら、凄い物が入っていた：
オリジナルな手作りSkullboyフィギュア！！

前の展示会で僕のイラストをフィギュアに出来たら最高だという話をしていて、
知らない間に濱田君が苦労してそのフィギュアを作ってくれた。
僕の大好きなベアブリックをベースにして、手作りのパーツを付けて改造したらしい。
このフィギュアをいっぱい作れたらいいな～と思った… 玩具メーカーの方がこれを読んだら連絡ください。

ちなみに、次のGravity展は10月13日～19日に開催する予定。詳細は後ほどアップします。

Fellow Gravity members Shimatani and Hamada came to visit us the other day.
On arrival Hamada produced a little silver box and announced that he had something for me.
I am now the proud owner of a one-off, hand-made Skullboy figure!

We had talked at the last exhibition about how cool it would be to turn my Skullboy illustration into a figure, and unbeknownst to me Hamada has been quietly working on this little fella for many months.

The base is a Be@rbrick (one of my favourite toys) onto which Hamada grafted and sculpted new parts.
I only wish there was some way to turn this into a production piece. If there are any toy manufacturers out there, please get in touch.
