The Art of Gravity group exhibition finished last Sunday.
We had a pretty good week with roughly the same amount of visitors as last time.

As an artist it is always interesting to see what kind of things catch people’s attention.
This time I had more detailed and perhaps more horror themed pieces on display, but as always it was the “cuter”, simpler characters (like my “Meat Bear“) that seemed to be more popular. Hardly a surprise I suppose, and the reason why I always try to produce a range of work as I know that skulls are not to everyone’s liking. It was also the first time that I had displayed my papercraft, which gave people something a little different to look at.

I am currently playing with some ideas for different kinds of exhibitions, but if possible I would like to keep the Gravity project going and have at least one group show a year.

「The Art of Gravity展　第３弾」が先週の日曜日に無事終わりました。
客数は第２弾と同じ位で、かなりいい展示会になったと思う。

アーティストとして、お客さんがどんな展示物に興味を示すか、というのはいつも面白い。
今回、僕の作品は前回より細かい（こっている？）、ホラー・テイストのものが多かったと思う。
でも、やっぱりシンプルで可愛いキャラクター（「Meat Bear」など）の方が人気を集めた。
皆が皆スカルが好きってわけではないので、いつも出来るだけ色んなキャラクターを描くようにしている。
今回初めてペーパークラフトも展示して、一味違うものがあってよかったと思う。

今後、色んなプロジェクトを考えているけど、グループ展示会のコンセプトが好きなので、
できれば少なくとも年一回くらいGravity展を開きたいと思っている。

I thought it was about time that I updated with a few pieces of Horrorwood news.

Firstly as I am sure most of you will have noticed I am slowly bringing a few different touches to the site and started with a new header logo.

This also brings me to my second piece of news. I have just completed my third t-shirt design. The front bears the above new logo in shocking pink, with “The Beast of Horrorwood” curled up on the back. I personally feel that this is the best shirt so far. More details can be found on the t-shirts page.

Thirdly, as I may have mentioned before, my papercraft “Go Bananas” is to feature in a bona fide published book. It is called “Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build“, and was put together by web aquaintance Matt Hawkins, who kindly asked me to join the project a few months ago. The book will be out next Spring but is available for pre-order on Amazon now. It will include a DVD of all the papercraft designs for readers to put together themselves.

Lastly, today was the opening day of The Art of Gravity Part 3 show. It was a national holiday here in Japan today and this was reflected in the number of visitors we had (over 100 at the midway point when I left). We were also interviewed live on local radio. I feel that I have upped the ante both with the quality of my artwork and display this year. The show will be running all week if anyone is in the area.

ホラーウッドの最新ニュースです。

まず始めに、お気づきの方もいるとは思いますが、最近ブログのイメージをちょっと変えようと思い、
手始めにブログのトップにあるホラーウッドのロゴを作り直した。

それから、三番目のデザインのＴシャツが完成した。
表のプリントは先ほど紹介した新ロゴで、色はショッキングピンク。
後ろには新デザインのモンスターが載っている。
このＴシャツが今までで一番よく出来たと、自分では思っている。

次はペーパークラフト。
以前ブログに書いたかもしれないが、僕のクラフト「Go Bananas」は本格的な本に掲載される。
本のタイトルは「Urban Paper: 25 Designer Toys to Cut Out and Build」。
ウェブを通して知り合ったMatt Hawkinsさんが編集したもので、来年の春に発売予定だけど、既にアマゾンなどで予約できるらしい。
本に載っているペーパークラフトを印刷することができるＤＶＤが本に付いている。

最後のニュース。
今日から、グループ展示会「The Art of Gravity 第三弾」が始まった。
祝日ということで沢山の人が来てくれた。
僕が4時頃に帰った時点で来客数が100人を超えていた！！
それにＲＮＣ西日本放送のラジオも来てくれ、インタビューされた。
個人的に、僕の作品やディスプレイは前回よりパワーアップ出来たと思っている。
展示会は今週の日曜日までやっているので、高松周辺にいらしたら是非見に来てください。

ホラーウッドの最新のＴシャツを紹介します。今回の「Meat Bear」（肉好きな熊）が登場します。
このキャラクターは昔何回もスケッチしたことあるので、復活させようと思った。

今回は初めて２色のプリントに挑戦した。簡単に見えるかもしれないけど、そのハート部分をきれいに合わせるのは意外と難しかった。
なので、もっと複雑なプリントを作る時は事前に色々考えないとだめと思った。

このデザインは白とグレイのベースにプリントして、ハートの色は３つの違う色にしてみた。

Here is my latest T-Shirt design featuring my character “Meat Bear”.
I have sketched a similar looking character many times in the past and decided to bring him back.

This was my first attempt at printing with more than one colour. Though it looks simple, lining up the heart was quite a challenge, so I will have to think carefully before trying any more complex prints.

The shirt is available on white or grey and there is a variety of heart colours.

今年のHorrorwoodオリジナルTシャツの第1弾が完成しました！ただいま発売中！

シルク・スクリーンは意外と難しいっていうことに気付いたけど、結果には満足している上、いい勉強になりました。

最初のデザインに「Bad Eggs」っていうキャラクターを選びました。
このキャラクターは昔から頭の奥にありました。
Tシャツは１００％綿のヘビーウェートTです。プリント入りの封筒に入って、特別のフルカラー・ポストカードも付いています。
サイズは殆ど全部揃っていて、色は今のところ白に黒か黒に白。

これから色んなデザインを色んな色でリリースする予定です。

I have finally completed my first batch of T-shirts and they are officially now on sale.

I discovered that screen printing is not as easy as it appears, but am pretty pleased with the result and learnt a lot through the experience.

For my first release I went with a simple black and white design called “Bad Eggs”.
These are characters that I have had flouting around in my head for some time now.
The shirts are 100% heavy-weight cotton and come in a screen printed envelope with an exclusive full colour postcard.
They are available in most sizes and come in black on white or white or black.

数週間前にGravity展のメンバーで友人の嶋谷くんから、彼の作品を入れるパッケージのデザインを依頼された。
嶋谷くんは『Snug Stain』というブランド名で、ハンドメイドで精巧なシルバーアクセサリーを制作している。
今回僕がパッケージデザインをした作品はバイクのパーツ（ピストン、スパークプラグなど）のミニチュアをモチーフとしたもの。

そこで、既存のパッケージのパロディー（？）でデザインしてみた。
一番大変だったのは、箱を「より汚く見せる」こと･･･！これが唯一の要望だった！
イラストレーターで色々なファンクションを試した末にリアルな「オイル汚れ」を作るのに成功した。

※全ての箱の「オイル汚れ」は微妙に違います！良く見てみて下さい。
完璧主義は嶋谷くんだけじゃないみたい････笑

Gravity展第二弾が月曜日（10/8）から始まります。
Be there or be square（直訳：つまらない人間になりたくなかったら、必ず来ること）
皆さん、遊びに来てくださ～い。

A few weeks ago friend and fellow Gravity member Takeshi Shimatani recruited me to design some packaging for his jewellery. Takeshi hand makes highly detailed silver accessories under his Snug Stain label. The pieces I helped design packaging for are all highly detailed miniature replicas of motorbike parts, such as pistons and sparkplugs.

I went with the idea of creating parodies of existing product packaging. The real challenge was making the packaging look as dirty as possible, which was Takeshi’s one stipulation.
After playing around with some new functions on Illustrator, I finally managed to come up with some pretty convincing oil and dirt effects.

Please note that each box has different dirt!
Takeshi is not the only one who is a stickler for detail…

Gravity展の第一弾では、僕のデザインを利用して、シンプルなプロダクトを作ることに挑戦した。その経験を通して色んな事を勉強出来た。
今回のプロダクトはエコ君のレターセット。
エコ君というキャラクターは熱心な『環境戦士』。だから、僕のプロダクトもこの気持ちを示さないとダメだと思って、再生紙を使用した。
２色のエコ君は、少し味のある再生紙に良く合っていて、このシンプルなデザインに結構満足している。

At the first Gravity show earlier this year I made an attempt at creating some simple products featuring my designs, and learnt a lot from the experience.
This time I settled on a single item - the Eco-kun writing set.
As my Eco-kun character is supposed to be an ardent eco-warrior, I realised that my product would have to reflect this, and so I made sure that my letter set was printed on recycled paper.
I am pleased with the simplicity of the design, and as I had hoped the 2-tone characters work well on the textured recycled paper.
