A few months ago I was invited by Rick Iks to provide some paper toy customs for an Italian charity event
called Paper People. Here you can see the 2 customs that I submitted.
First is my version of 3EyedBear’s classic 3EyedBear entitled “Scare Bear”.
I tried to remain faithful to the original design and colour scheme while giving the character the Horrorwood touch.

My second custom was of PhilToys’ Mini Box_Can. With this design I was trying out some new ideas
and went with a simple base and added some esoteric imagery. My custom is called “Esoteric Kid”.

I had great fun working on both of these very different bases.
2 fund raising exhibitions were held in October this year in Pordenone and Trieste.
The events were apparently well received and so Paper People has been turned into a fully fledged project/community.

数ヶ月前にRick Iksさんより「Paper People」というイタリアのチャリティー イベント
にペーパークラフトのカスタムを提供しないか、と誘って頂けました。
その２つのカスタムを紹介します。
最初は3EyedBearさんの代表キャラクター「3EyedBear」のカスタム、「Scare Bear」。
出来るだけオリジナルの雰囲気や色合いを守りながらホラーウッドのテイストで仕上げた。

１０月に２つのチャリティー イベントがイタリアのポルデノーネとトリエスに開催された。
このイベントは好評を博したらしいので、Paper Peopleは本格的なプロジェクト/コミュニティーになった。

As mentioned in a previous post I recently received the 40th custom toy for my Calling All Cars series.
In celebration I have decided to release a jumbo version of the very first custom I received from the masterful Matt Hawkins.
Matt’s design looked great before, but looks even wilder as a jumbo car.

Here at last is the forth illustration in my Death Mask series.
This one took forever not only because I tried to make it more detailed but also because I was pushing my computer too hard.
I suffered several corrupted files and working with the file near the end was like slow motion torture.
Anyway I learnt a lot and hope it was worth the effort.

今回の作品は何ヶ月もかかりました。
より細かいイラストに挑戦しようとして、パソコンにかなり無理をさせてしまい
何回かデータを失うことになった。最後の方はスローモーションみたいな感じで苦労しながら作業した…
とにかく苦労にしたけれど、色々勉強になったし、それに見合う結果になったかなと思っている。

Late as always but here is the 40th custom in my Calling All Cars series.
This car is called “Independent Woman” and was designed by Indonesian artist Yulia aka JoeL.
In Yulia’s own words this toy is “dedicated for Indonesian independence on August 17 and also for all women who are independent, stand for the emancipation”.

I think that 40 designs is a milestone worth celebrating and as such I will be releasing a little bonus sometime later this year.

Firstly I must apologise to anyone who tried to visit my site over the last 3 weeks and found that it had been
listed as an attack site by Google. Some kind hacker found their way into my blog.
Thanks to the efforts of a computer literate friend of my mine things are finally back to normal.
Again, many apologies for the inconvenience.
Back to the case in hand. I returned from my holiday in the UK to find a very welcome package from America. It was also however tinged with much sadness as I received a stack of the latest I Want Your Skull magazines. This was the last issue of the magazine made before Ryan August passed away and the package also included a very kind note from his wife Sarah.
Issue 9 is as always of the highest quality and includes art from some real heavy hitters such as Brian Morris and Hydro74. I think that it is a fitting tribute to all the hard work and passion that Ryan put into this project. My humble contribution can be seen above. The brief was to create something on the theme of “Rebellion” and my piece is called “The Endless Struggle”. I was working again with symmetry and esoteric symbolism.
R.I.P. Ryan.
最初におわびすべきことがあります。この３週間僕のホームページがダウンしました。
なぜかと言うとハッカーがサイトに侵入して内容を改ざんしたため。
そのせいでしばらくグーグルのブラックリストに載せられた。
しかし、パソコンに詳しい友達に助けてもらって復旧した。
本題に戻ると、先日アメリカから小包が届いた。
その中身は「I Want Your Skull」雑誌の最新版。もちろん頂くのは嬉しかったけど、同時にとても悲しい気持ちも感じて。
というのも編集者のRyan Augustさんが亡くなる前の最後の一冊だったから。
またRyanさんの妻Sarahさんから優しい手書きの手紙も入っていました。
今回の雑誌も相変わらずレベルが高く、Brian MorrisやHydro74などのアート界の大物も参加している。
このプロジェクトに対するRyanさんの熱意や努力表す素晴らしい１冊となった。
わずかながら記載された僕の作品は上記。
頼まれたテーマは「反乱」でこの作品のタイトルは「終わることのない闘い」。
またシンメトリや秘伝的なシンボルで遊んで見ました。
Ryanさんのご冥福を心よりお祈りします。

Here is another recent custom piece – my version of Thomas Hamlyn-Harris’ “Ship’s Cat”, which I named “Salty Tom”. I spent a bit of time researching old sailors’ tattoos and decided to cover him in them.
As well as paper toys Thomas also produces the wonderful online magazine “Inavatof”. Invatof is an inovative blend of puzzles, fun facts and artwork (amongst other things) that can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike. Thomas was kind enough to interview me for the latest symmetry-themed issue and Salty Tom is also featured.

今回のベースはThomas Hamlyn-Harrisさんの「Ship’s Cat」で、名前は「Salty Tom」。
時間をかけて昔の船乗りのタトゥーを研究して、全身に入れて見た。
Thomasはペーパークラフトだけではなくて、素敵なオンライン雑誌「Inavatof」も編集している。
Inavatofはパズル、アートや色んなおもしろ情報を紹介して、子供から大人まで楽しめる。
最新版のテーマは「シンメトリー」で、Salty Tomと共に僕のインタビューやアート集もフィーチャーされている。

For better or worse I have been very busy with the day job recently hence the lack of updates.
This is pretty late but I’d like to introduce a custom I did of Phil Toys’ “Boxcan”.
It was initially intended to be used for an exhibition, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond Phil’s control this never happened. Phil was however kind enough to let me host my design on my site so you can now go and grab him for free.
The title of my custom is “Ghost Hardware”.
These days I see customs as an opportunity to try out new styles and techniques as can be seen here.
The inspiration behind the piece was the idea of ancient technology with the addition of a certain amount of esoteric signs and symbols.
The Boxcan form is very interesting and it is the first piece I have worked on that allows for a certain amount of poseability. The title came from the title of a track by Burial who I was listening to a lot at the time (see clip below).
最近仕事でかなり忙しかったので、残念ながらあまりアートやブログをやる時間がなかった。
やっと落ち着いたので少し前に作ったペーパークラフトのカスタムを紹介します。

Earlier this week I received some incredibly sad news.
Ryan August of I Want Your Skull was killed in a car crash on Saturday July 11th.
He was driving home with his son in a storm when his car hit a tree.
Luckily his son survived with minor injuries but Ryan died on impact.
You have probably noticed Ryan’s name mentioned regularly on my site.
Though I have never met him in person, I felt like we had become friends through our email communications.
I was invited several times to contribute illustrations to his magazine and this culminated in our paper toy collaboration Skull King.
My illustrations for IWYS were the first time that I had had anything in print so it really meant a lot to me.
Ryan was also an enthusiast of Japanese tattoo culture and I used to enjoy sending him packages of bizarre books.
The internet is a strange place. Making friends over the net is great but hearing of their death in the same way is just bizarre.
My thoughts are with Ryan’s wife Sarah and his son Declan.
I hope to do some kind of artwork as a small tribute to Ryan in the near future as I cannot really think of any thing else I can do.
先週凄く悲しいニュースがありました。
「I Want Your Skull」のRyan Augustが11日に交通事故で亡くなりました。
家に帰っている途中嵐に襲われて木に衝突した。
息子さんも一緒に乗っていましたが運良く軽傷で済んだ。
このブログでRyanさんの名前を何回も見たと思います。
残念なことに直接会う機会はなかったものの、メールのやりとりで僕達は友達になったと感じました。
Ryanが編集している雑誌に3回ほどイラストを載せて頂いたり、先月合作のペーパークラフトシリーズ「Skull King」も完成したばかり。
初めて作品を雑誌に載せてもらったことは、僕にとって凄く大事なきっかけでした。
Ryanさんは日本のことに非常に興味を持っていました。
日本の刺青文化に特に好きだったので、色んなな珍しい本を彼に送ってあげるのが僕の楽しみだった。
インターネットというのは本当に不思議。ネットのおかげで色んな友達が出来たが、友達が死んでしまったことをネットで知るのは本当に変な気持ち。
Ryanの妻のSarahさんと息子のDeclan君の心痛を心よりお察し致します。
Ryanを追悼して、何かのアートプロジェクトを始める予定。

You may remember my Skull King paper toy that was released as an exclusive free gift with the last issue of I Want Your Skull magazine.
Well, Ryan of IWYS and I got together and decided to recruit some artists to customize my craft.
We ended up with 7 fantastic designs from various artists who have previously contributed to IWYS magazine.
This time all of the designs are available for free download and we have split the series into 2 sets, which can be downloaded exclusively from our respective sites.
