昨日Gravityのメンバー嶋谷と濱田が家を訪ねてくれた。
着いてすぐ、浜田君に小さい金属の箱を渡された。開けたら、凄い物が入っていた：
オリジナルな手作りSkullboyフィギュア！！

前の展示会で僕のイラストをフィギュアに出来たら最高だという話をしていて、
知らない間に濱田君が苦労してそのフィギュアを作ってくれた。
僕の大好きなベアブリックをベースにして、手作りのパーツを付けて改造したらしい。
このフィギュアをいっぱい作れたらいいな～と思った… 玩具メーカーの方がこれを読んだら連絡ください。

ちなみに、次のGravity展は10月13日～19日に開催する予定。詳細は後ほどアップします。

Fellow Gravity members Shimatani and Hamada came to visit us the other day.
On arrival Hamada produced a little silver box and announced that he had something for me.
I am now the proud owner of a one-off, hand-made Skullboy figure!

We had talked at the last exhibition about how cool it would be to turn my Skullboy illustration into a figure, and unbeknownst to me Hamada has been quietly working on this little fella for many months.

The base is a Be@rbrick (one of my favourite toys) onto which Hamada grafted and sculpted new parts.
I only wish there was some way to turn this into a production piece. If there are any toy manufacturers out there, please get in touch.

The next Gravity show is planned for October 13th-19th. Details to follow.

これは6月のペーパークラフト。先月のオモチャのリミックスです。
今回のキャラクターはチンパンジー警察のベテラン警官。
前回紹介した、いたずら好きなサルは高速道路にバナナの皮を落とそうとしているから、パトカーで追跡！
机の上で二匹並べたらいい感じ。是非作ってみてください。

Here is my paper toy for June. As you can see I went for a remix of the last design.
The title is “The Long Paw of the Law” - an officer from the Chimp Police Department keen on stopping the “Go Bananas” chimp from dropping his banana skins all over the highway.
As hoped the 2 apes look pretty nice chasing each other on my desktop.

今回はいつもよりもうちょっと細かいイラストを紹介します。
テーマは「Genie」(精霊)、雰囲気は70年代のロックポスター。
実は僕は有名な画家のミュシャやアールヌーボーの大ファンで、その影響も入っているかもしれません（特に模様や色使い）。
この様なより細かい作品をもっと描いてみたいけど、相変わらず時間の問題とめんどくさがりやの性格が僕の敵です。

Here is a more complex illustration that I came up with recently.
The inspiration behind this was a genie for the theme, and a 70s rock poster for the style.
I am also a big fan of Mucha and Art Nouveau and feel that the finished piece also has a flavour of this about it, maybe in the colour scheme and patterns.
I would like to create some more detailed pieces in this vein, but time and laziness is as ever a problem.

新しいキャラクターです。最初はもうちょっとグロイものにするつもりだったけど、結果はおしゃれなゾンビみたいなヤツ。
今回も自然なブラッシュのラインに挑戦、そしてもっとビビッドな色を使ってみました。

Here is a new character design. I had intended him to be a little more horrific, but he ended up looking like a trendy zombie. Again, it was another attempt at creating more natural brush strokes. I also wanted to start using more vivid colours.

今回のイラストでまたブラッシュツールを使いこなそうとした。
結果には結構満足していて、ちょっとずつもっと自然で手描きっぽいスタイルに近づいていると思う。
テーマは「鎧」。もとになった画像は下（武田信玄の鎧）。

久しぶりに日本風のイラストを描きたくて、鎧はモンスターのいいベースになると思った。
色はできるだけシンプルにして、線はわざと真っ黒ではない。なぜかというと、それでさらに手描きっぽくなると思ったから。

This illustration was another attempt to make good use of the brush tool.
I am pretty pleased with the result and feel I am getting closer to a more natural, hand-drawn style.
The theme for this piece was a Japanese suit of armour, or “yoroi” (source pictured below: armour which belonged to the famous Takeda Shingen).

I haven’t done anything Japanese themed for a while and thought the armour would be a good base for a monster.
I tried to keep the colour scheme simple and also avoided using pure black for the outlines; again to give the piece a more hand-done feel.

この間長男が生まれて、想像のとおり僕達は毎日忙しくしている。
だけど、約束通りに5月分のペーパークラフトをどうにか完成させた。

今回のクラフトのタイトルは「Go Bananas」。僕はサルを嫌いな人はいないと勝手に思ってて、そのうえこいつはちっちゃい赤い車に乗ってるので、魅力度がさらにアップじゃない？！前のクラフトと比べたら更にレベルアップしたと思う。形をもっと面白くしよう思って、色もより派手にして見た。僕は結構満足してるので、皆さんも作って、楽しく遊べたらいいな～と思ってる。

今回のクラフトをベースに、次のやつも作るかもしれない。2匹のサルが机の上でレースしてるところを想像したら楽しそう。

My wife recently gave birth to our first boy, so as you can imagine I have been a little distracted to say the least. However I somehow managed to come through on my promise of producing another paper toy for May.

The title of this toy is “Go Bananas”. I decided that everyone loves monkeys, and to make things even better
this one’s in a little red car!

I feel that I’ve upped the ante since my last effort, with a more satisfying shape and a more lively colour scheme.
I’m pretty pleased with the end result and hope you all enjoy constructing and playing with him. I may use this as a platform for my next piece, as I think it would be cool to have a couple of these guys having a race on my desktop.

皆さん気が付いたと思いますが、僕はスカルの大ファンです。なぜかというと、スカルはホラーの基本のイメージの一つだと思ってるから。平凡なイメージにスカルを足したら、雰囲気が完全に変わる。なので、この間スカルイラストを描こうと決めた。新しいテクニックも試してみたくて、結果は上のイラスト。

最近スカルをテーマにしてる面白いサイトを2つも発見した。一つは「I Want Your Skull」。このサイトでは色んなアーティストのスカルアートを紹介する。それから、サイトの制作者Ryan Augustさんが選んだイラストを特集にしてる高質な雑誌もたまに出版してる。Ryanさん自身もイラストレーターで、彼のサイトはこちら。この間、僕のアートを紹介して頂いて、そのおかげでスカルアートをもっと描きたくなった。

２番目のサイトは「Skull-A-Day」。このブログではアーティストのNoahさんは毎日自分のオリジナルスカルアートを一枚紹介している。これはすごいことだと思う。なんと今までの作品は300枚を越えてる！毎日全く違うアートを出してるにもかかわらず、クォリティーが凄く高くて、Noahさんがいったいいつ寝てるのかは謎です。

As most readers will have guessed I am a big fan of skulls, as I feel they are one of the classic key elements of horror imagery. Adding a skull to an otherwise mundane image can completely change the whole feel of the piece. This week I wanted to come up with a skull-based piece and also felt like trying out some new techniques. The result is the above illustration.

Recently I also came across a couple of interesting skull sites. The first one is called I Want Your Skull, which introduces skull and skeleton based work from a wide range of artists. A couple of times a year they also produce a very high quality fanzine containing some of the author Ryan August’s favourite pieces. Ryan is also an artist in his own right and you can see his work here. He was also kind enough to feature some of my work this month which inspired me to do more skull pieces.

The second site is called Skull-A-Day and is a blog where author Noah introduces a new piece of his original skull-based artwork every day. It is quite an achievement to say the least, and he has now produced work for over 300 days! All of the pieces are of a surprisingly high quality so it is difficult to imagine that the artist has any time to sleep at all.

ホラーウッドの新マスコットキャラクター｢マイケル」を紹介します。
Tシャツに使えるようなシンプルなデザインを作りたくて･･･で、結果はこれです。
このキャラクターのインスピレーション元は多分言わなくとも分かるでしょう…笑
このイラストは初めてブラッシュのツールをちゃんと利用して描いてみた。おかげで線がもっと柔らかく、手書きっぽく出来たと思う。

近々このデザインを手作りシルクスクリーンTシャツにする予定なので、引き続きブログを要チェック！

Introducing the new Horrorwood mascot “Michael”.
I wanted to come up with a simple design that I could use on a shirt and this was the result.　I think that the inspiration behind the piece is probably obvious…
I also made use of the brush tool properly for the first time, which perhaps helps makes the lines a little softer and more hand-drawn in appearance.

Hopefully I will be printing up some handmade silk screen t-shirts soon featuring this fella, so watch this space.
