Watchmen Nanibirds

A little while ago Josh McKible invited me again to make some customs for his Nanibird series.
The Nanibird is a wonderful base to work with and I happily jumped on this opportunity.

With the exception my Nightmare on Elm Street inspired papercraft I don’t usually do parodies or homages.
However this time I had a stroke of inspiration and had to run with it.

I was reading the Watchmen and thinking about Nanibirds and the very obvious idea of a Nite Owl bird came to mind. Once I had completed Nite Owl I was compelled to create a natural pair for him in the form of madman Rorschach.  Though Rorschach doesn’t lend himself so well to the bird form, I am pleased with result and think they make a nice set.

As luck would have it the Watchmen movie has also just dropped on DVD making for a timely release.
Both toys can be downloaded from Horrorwood Hills or directly from the Nanibird homepage.
Josh has decided to do away with batch releases and will now be periodically putting customs he receives up for download on his site.

Lord of Thunder Paper Totem!

A few months ago Dolly Oblong (who contributed a wonderful design to the first wave of Calling All Cars) started her own papercraft custom project, called “Paper Totem!”

The idea behind the craft is very simple but works incredibly well. There is one basic template that can be adapted in many ways, and each toy can be stacked one on top of another to make a totem pole. There have already been many amazing contributions to the series from a wide variety of artists, which shows the flexibility and vast potential of this craft.

I decided to try my hand at a Totem and spent rather a long time coming up with the design you see here.
The title for my piece is “Lord of Thunder”. I wanted to make this a really detailed piece and also allow for various different permutations with the multiple faces.

You can pick up your own Horrorwood Totem over at Dolly’s homepage by clicking here.
While you are there check out all of the other fantastic designs, all available for free download.

題名は「Lord of Thunder」。

Horrorwood x Speakerdog – Night x Day Collabo

Horrorwood has teamed up again to bring you another great collaboration project.
This time I joined forces with Ben the Illustrator (of Speakerdog fame) to produce two great toys.
As with my previous Nanibird tie-up, the idea came to me of rescaling my “Paper Demon” toy so that he could ride on a Speakerdog.
The result is the 2 toys you see here:
my “Dog Rider” representing the dark side, and Ben’s “Uke Troupe” representing the light.
The craft are available for free download from our respective sites.
Once again I have also created some free wallpaper to celebrate the completion of the project.

Horrorwood x Nanibird – Calling All Cars Mega Combo

For the release of the Urban Paper book a few weeks ago Josh McKible (of Nanibird fame) and I decided to do a special collaboration. I came up with the idea of scaling up my “Calling All Cars” car so that it could accommodate one of Josh’s Nanibirds. The result is these 2 exclusive designs that can be downloaded as a deluxe bumper bundle.

My design is called “The Banana Bird”, for which I clothed a bird (based on a real Banana Bird) in the same outfit as my original “Go Bananas” ape. The car is the same red sporty number as the original (albeit super-sized to fit the bird).

Josh went with a radical reworking of the original base and created the wonderfully futuristic “Space Racer”.
The feeling of speed he created with this one is fantastic. Instead of wheels this baby actually “hovers” in the air.

This is a dual release available for download on both of our sites.

I have also created some wallpaper of my design at various sizes which is free to download.
Head over here or click the image above to grab the goods.

Nanibird Series 3

Imaginary Friend

Josh McKible has just released the third series of his wonderful papercraft creation Nanibird.
This time he has managed to collect a massive 30 designs from a wide range of artists.

As I mentioned a while back Josh was kind enough to invite me contribute a couple of the designs to the series (above).

You can download my design by visiting the papercraft page or by going directly to the Nanibird site.
All designs are free to download. Below is a sample of some designs by other artists.

Secret Base

Secret Base is a Japanese toy maker who up until now I have had little interest in.
The company has admittedly gained a legendary status as being one of the first to produce the new wave of “designer” vinyl toys. My beef with the company is that they only seem to have a handful of designs that they churn out endless versions of in different colours, each time with a hefty price tag.
The trendy label that they have earned for themselves however means that each time people are clamoring to get their hands on a “new” release.

This bias of mine was recently reversed a little when I was able to cheaply purchase a blank version of one of Secret Base’s staple figures, “Skullbee”. The unpainted version revealed that the sculpt of the figure is actually really nice; clean, smooth lines and good proportions. My main reason for getting the toy however was that it provided me with an opportunity to try my hand at a custom paint job for the first time.

I kept the whole thing very simple to avoid making a mess of the whole thing, using model paints, pens and some transfers. I am generally pleased with the result, but even a simple custom like this was not easy so I don’t think I’ll be doing another one for a while. I will probably use my Skullbee as part of my display at my next exhibition.

Skills to Pay the Bills

このフィギュアをいっぱい作れたらいいな~と思った… 玩具メーカーの方がこれを読んだら連絡ください。

Fellow Gravity members Shimatani and Hamada came to visit us the other day.
On arrival Hamada produced a little silver box and announced that he had something for me.
I am now the proud owner of a one-off, hand-made Skullboy figure!

We had talked at the last exhibition about how cool it would be to turn my Skullboy illustration into a figure, and unbeknownst to me Hamada has been quietly working on this little fella for many months.

The base is a Be@rbrick (one of my favourite toys) onto which Hamada grafted and sculpted new parts.
I only wish there was some way to turn this into a production piece. If there are any toy manufacturers out there, please get in touch.

The next Gravity show is planned for October 13th-19th. Details to follow.
