Jet Plastic and Fonotune

Last year I was invited by German designer Fabian Huebner of Fint design to provide work for 2 very exciting projects. The first was to create a cover illustration and some logos for a new comic anthology that he is working on called Jet Plastic.
I have included my logo and a preview of the illustration here, but please head over to the site for more details on the project as well as a look at the other fantastic artists involved.

The second project was to provide some paper toys to promote Fabian’s feature film Fonotune.
Though it is taking me a long time, eventually there will be a toy for each of the 3 main characters in the film.
Last month an exhibition event was held in Berlin to promote the film called Fntnism and samples of my first toy were handed out to visitors. Fabian kindly sent me a pack of goodies from the event and again you can get a sneak peek of my work in the image below.

Kickstarter Success

Totally after the fact as usual but I am incredibly pleased to announce that the Shove It! Kickstarter was a success and we ended up with 45% over the target fund raising amount. This means that the exhibition will go ahead as planned in June. Many thanks to Baykiddead and all involved for their hard work.

I myself made a small contribution to get hold of an awesome commemorative t-shirt designed by British illustrator Uberkraaft featuring the following image:

Here also is a full reveal of my design. I have ordered a few decks for myself and can’t wait to see how the real thing looks.

As for the paper toy you will have to wait for the exhibition.

Shove It! Kickstarter

A Kickstarter program has now been started by Baykiddead to help cover the costs of putting on the Shove It! exhibition that I introduced in my last post.
However they are not simply asking for donations – with Kickstarter rewards are offered depending on how much you contribute. For example if you pledge $75 then you can receive one of the decks from the exhibition. This time the pledge range is from between $5 and $10000. The project must reach its target of $6250 by April 3rd or all pledges will be lost.

Below is an updated selection of decks designs that have been submitted so far and also a widget displaying the current status of the campaign.
Every little helps so please contribute if you can. It’s a chance to help a great project and get hold of some amazing artwork.

Shove It!

A little while back paper pal Baykiddead invited me to take part in a very exciting project.
He told me that he was gathering artists for a group exhibition entitled Shove It! to raise money to build America’s largest free outdoor skatepark in downtown Des Moines (Iowa).
My job was to design a skateboard deck and accompanying paper toy.

The deck proved to be a big challenge as it a unique size and shape to work with and it took me a lot longer than I expected. Thankfully I just managed to finish my pieces before the deadline.
Baykiddead just revealed a preview of the first 5 designs, which can be seen above.
My design is titled “False Idol” and is my usual occult demon face affair.

Shove It! will take place from June 7th at the Polk County Heritage Gallery in Des Moines.
All the details including the artist line-up etc. can be found by clicking here.
There is also a Shove It! Facebook page.

I am extremely grateful for this amazing opportunity and hope that my contribution will go some way to helping realize this very worthwhile project.

A few weeks ago I went to see a group show called “Permutations” which included the work of some artist friends who I have previously collaborated with on many occasions – namely Adrian Goodhand (photography), Junya Aga (sculpture) and Jeremy Lanig (photography).
They were joined by Mami Nagaoki a professional travel photographer.
The exhibition was held at Gallery MaruR in Kitahama Alley, Takamatsu (previous haunt of my Gravity shows).
I was also kindly invited to join but declined due to lack of time.
I have to say that the result was probably better without my work.
The three walls of the gallery were covered with photos with an intricate hanging instillation in the center making for a perfect balance which fitted the space well.
I apologize that this report is well after the fact but below are a few photos to give you a taste of the show.

Far Away Photos

Last weekend our show “Far Away So Close” came to an end.
I wasn’t able to participate as fully as I would have liked to, but according to reports we had a lot of positive feedback.
Hopefully our group will continue to exhibit in various forms from now on.
Here are a few pictures to give you a taste of the show.

Far Away So Close

Apologies for the lack of activity recently.
We returned to England for a month and since then work and family business has kept me very busy.
On top of that my computer died taking some of my artwork along with it…

Anyway, here at last is the finished colour version of “Tatargami” that I introduced a few months ago.
I am currently exhibiting this piece and a few others here in Takamatsu as part of a group art show entitled “Far Away So Close”. It features the work of foreign artists living in my area as well some of our Japanese friends. Many diciplines are represented and I think it makes for a very interesting show.

The exhibition is being held at Salon De Rubis from October 24th until November 27th.
If you happen to be in the area please pop in. Details can be found on the postcards below.

Better Late Than Never

This is very late but here are another 2 of my paper toy customs that are now available for download.

Firstly we have a special Calling All Cars toy that I did in collaboration with ToysREvil.
Some of you may remember that I first created this toy for sale at the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention 2009.

In celebration of 5 years of the ToysREvil blog I remixed the design as a special birthday version that can now be downloaded for free.
Click here or the banner above to go grab it. More pics on my site here.

Secondly we have one of my most eleborate custom pieces to date, which I did for Marko Zubak’s wonderful ye-boT initiative. He is called “The Guardian”.

Marko displayed his work along with customs from many international artists at a special exhibition in Croatia. It was all very professionally done and Marko even produced a very nice catalogue for the show.

You can download the designs and find out more about the project at the dedicated ye-boT site here.
More pics on my site here.

Marko also produces a very high level PDF paper toy magazine called “II LOVE” and in the latest issue (#5)
he was kind enough to feature my work along with an interview. You can download your copy for free by clicking here.

最初はおもちゃニュースブログ「ToysREvil」のために作った特別な「Calling All Cars」カスタム。

There will be a wide range of work on display and I think it is a very interesting concept for a show.

If you are around please feel free to pop in any time.
For more details click the poster image below.

Gravity Comes and Goes

My group art show “The Art of Gravity” came to a close last week.
Though we were not overwhelmed with visitors, there was a pretty good turn out.
As always everyone managed to muddle together an interesting display with a wide variety of works on offer.

As mentioned before I decided to try an all papercraft exhibition for the first time.
Though displaying paper is a little trickier than illustrations, I think I was successful and it was great to see all of the stuff I had been hording in boxes finally seeing the light of day.

Having so many different people’s work as part of my display certainly made an impact and I’d like to say thanks again to all of you who have contributed designs to the Calling All Cars series or who have done collabo work with me so far.

Below are a few photos of my stuff and a full gallery can be seen by clicking this link.

僕が参加しているグループ展示会「The Art of Gravity」が先週終了しました。
「Calling All Cars」のシリーズや他のコラボ・プロジェクトのおかげで、僕の物だけではなくて、色んなアーティストの作品も展示することが出来た。

Urban Paper Show Tokyo

Following hot on the heels of the Urban Paper show in the Netherlands, the next exhibition will be held here in Japan from September 7th-20th.
Josh McKible (Nanibird) kindly organized the event, which will be held at Cafe Pause in Tokyo run by Tokyo-based writer Jean Snow.
At present there are 13 artists confirmed for the show including Josh and myself.
In celebration of the opening of the show Josh also created a very lovely little paper toy mascot (above) which can be downloaded here.
I will also be revealing my Jumbo Go Bananas craft for the first time (below) in Tokyo.
This special toy will only be available at my exhibitions and possibly in limited quantities on my website at a later date.
