Junior High kid is having trouble at school. His dad has some kind of undesirable profession that causes him to be a target for mockery amongst his peers. He himself though is not a "dork" and has a little gang of friends, including a girl and a colored kid.
We get to see what life is like in an average day for the kid Stevie. Plenty of shots of him running away from bullies (perhaps with the aid of a skateboard), getting an earful from him Mom, throwing stones into a lake and looking up at the stars.
While at said lake we get our first introduction to the excitement to come when Stevie sees a strange flash of light across the sky and something go plummeting into the woods nearby.
The next day he and his gang decide to go look in the woods (at night of course, after sneaking out of their respective houses) and use ineffective flashlights etc. to aid their search. If there is a fat kid with them he will get told to "Shhh!" as he clumsily treads on noisy twigs etc.
Next we have a discovery scene with the kids poking at a strange metallic ball. Due to some unexpected action by one of the kids (maybe the fat one), such as shining the flashlight on a certain spot on the ball, it pops open much to the surprise of the kids. They run back behind some trees and eventually peep out to see what is in the clearing. To their surprise it is a REALLY CUTE LITTLE ROBOT.
Now the fun really begins! Stevie of course carries the robot around in his backpack and it is he who gets to keep the robot with him for the majority of the movie. The next day they have a "gang meeting" in the tree house in the colored kid's yard. They try to think of a name for their new cute friend. The girl says to the robot "Hey maybe you've already got a name. What's your name little fella?" In response to this we get a cute reaction from the robot with his flashing lips or eyes or whatever and he says in a robot voice "Chun-X", repeatedly. This turns out later to be the name of the planet he is from but for now the kids decide to call him "Chunx", which he will repeat at regular intervals in an endlessly cute way throughout the entire movie.
We are now treated to a montage of cute escapades featuring various combinations of Chunx and the gang (but mostly Stevie). There are of course many close scrapes when Chunx is nearly discovered by mom/bullies at school etc. Chunx also has a surprising interest in the most mundane facets of Stevie's young American life. For example he loves to watch as much TV as possible. He learns enough English to communicate in a broken "cute" way by watching the TV and also several really annoying catch phrases from commercials or movies (maybe even a movie that is popular at that time for clever movie-within-movie referencing). He will use these phrases at inopportune moments with much hilarity, trouble or eventually profound effects ensuing.
The all out funniest scene in the movie comes when Stevie's fat neighbor is bending over in his garden so we can see his ass crack and Chunx chirps up from Stevie's backpack saying "Woah look out below!" or "Too much butter!" or something that is just about relevant to the neighbor's ass crack. The neighbor of course turns around to see Stevie and chases him down the street with a "Why you little! I oughta!"
Eventually Chunx becomes integral to revealing some kind of plot or operation by an evil gang. Chunx gets carried off somewhere somehow, maybe by getting thrown into a garbage truck or getting attached to a taxi or something. At the other end of his journey he finds himself in a warehouse or other suitable gang location and then we have scenes of him pottering around in his cute way observing the evil operations of the gang. He may get rumbled, which would mean that Stevie would have to emerge from somewhere to rescue him by treading on toes or pushing over cardboard boxes etc.
When safely back in the tree house Chunx starts to repeat a phrase that he heard the gang say, which is the vital clue to what kind of evil operation the gang are up to and information about who was involved. The evil operation probably involves a respected politician or CEO as the boss.
Either: Stevie's gang set out on their own to capture the crooks, by using the pulleys and weights, sacks full of flour, ball bearings and cargo nets that can be found at the warehouse. The evil mastermind will end up bound by rope to be picked up by cops with perfect timing. Chunx will play a small part by scuttling around and maybe using some kind of space age gadget that he has to do no more than laser a crook's butt cheeks or something.
Or: Stevie's dad, who is a garbage collector, uses his garbage truck to crash into the warehouse and reveal the racket somehow. This way Stevie AND his dad would become heroes and he would not be bullied about his dad's profession any longer.
Either way the end result is the same. The kids are now officially the coolest gang in the school!!!
We now are presented with the "sad" scene. The gang is huddled round Chunx in the tree house and he shows them a holographic image of his "mom and dad" on their home planet Chun-X and he uses his "cute" broken English to express the fact that he misses them and has to go home. The kids are all crying and stroking Chunx but realize that they have to help him go home.
They again all sneak out at night and head back to where they found Chunx in the woods. They leave him there and watch from a distance as he heads off into space over the lake into the stars.
This is not the end of the movie however as Chunx will have left behind some kind of futuristic device that Stevie can use to foil some bullies in some way and instantly forget about how sad he was that his robot friend has left forever. It may be some kind of mini rocket booster that he attaches to his homemade go-kart, which helps him win the race in spectacular fashion, leaving the bullies with hair on end and singed faces.
Hi fives all round.
